Course Welcome

Welcome to Core Surgical Skills: Basic Instrument Use. This course was developed as a collaborative project between Colorado State University, The Ohio State University, and Texas A&M University. The result is a unique, web-based training program that we hope will serve as a foundational resource to support surgical training programs throughout the veterinary profession.

This course utilizes a skills-based approach to surgical training. In contrast to the traditional apprentice training method, which focuses on teaching specific surgical procedures, the skills-based training method breaks surgery down into a series of core surgical skills. The rationale behind skill-based training is to equip veterinarians with the core surgical skills necessary to perform any common surgical procedure encountered in practice.

This Basic Instrument Use course is intended to provide the novice surgeon with detailed information on the use of common surgical instruments encountered in soft tissue surgery including scalpels, thumb forceps, scissors, surgical clamps, and needle holders. Developing accuracy, consistency, and security while using these instruments will be the main goals for students participating in this course.
