  • Welcome to the Moodle Small Animal Service!

This is a unique opportunity for you, as a third year student, to manage virtual hospital cases. You will be able to apply, integrate, and organize material that you have learned up until this point, as well as research veterinary literature to master new concepts.

You may already have had some experience working through on-line cases, so take a minute to pay attention to some things that may be unique to this module.

    1. Each case includes a CLIPBOARD that you can access (from the menu link) throughout the case. Here you will be able to see the results of any tests you have performed, as well as history and physical examination information.
    2. You cannot move backward through a case once you have advanced to the next screen.
    3. I’ll be asking you questions about the case as you go. Read the questions carefully. If it says “select ALL that apply”, there may be more than one right answer. You will be scored as you go, and you must receive a minimum score of 70% to advance to the next case.

There are 4 exam rooms and you will see multiple patients in each exam room. You will begin in the bronze exam room. When you have successfully completed the required cases here, you will be notified and will move into the silver exam room. When you have successfully completed these required cases, you may move onto cases in the gold and platinum rooms (these later two rooms are optional). Challenge yourself to see if you can manage the cases in all four rooms.

In addition to asking you questions about each case as you go, I'll also be sharing feedback along the way. You can use resources (textbooks, class notes, on-line websites), but do not work with anyone else. The questions will help you gain the expertise to successfully diagnose and treat patients. If you find a case challenging, you will have the opportunity to see another pet with a similar problem before moving onto the next patient. For other patients, I’ll ask you to go back and work through the case again. We’ll make sure you are successful before you leave the Moodle clinic.

When you complete the cases in an exam room, you will earn a digital badge that will display on your Moodle profile. You can earn up to four badges in each of these topics. These badges are part of the Open Badges system and will indicate to others that you have the skills to work through the cases in this module. You can post these on your CV or sites like LinkedIn to communicate your expertise to future employers.

The cases waiting to see you today have disorders of the urinary tract. Urinary tract disorders are so common in small animals, so you are sure to use the skills you practice today in your clinical practice. We have quite a few patients waiting, so let’s get started. Oh, and if you have any problems or questions about navigating through the cases or exam rooms, reach out to the CET HelpDesk (cethelpdesk@cvm.tamu.edu).

Optimal mobile configurations include using either the Moodle App or the default browser for Android or Safari on the iPad. For desktops and laptops, each platforms default browser, or Chrome, or Firefox should provide a good experience.
