Adopting a Consistent Set-up for Knot Tying

View

It is important to position the suture strands and your arms/hands in a standard fashion each time you set up for knot tying, whether you choose a hand or an instrument tie.

Your knotting technique should remain the same regardless of the orientation of the incision or pedicle you are attempting to suture or ligate. Instead of altering your technique with every change in orientation of the suture line or pedicle presented to you, consider changing your body and viewpoint to keep your knot-tying technique the same. The hands and arms should move comfortably toward and away from the body, parallel to the plane of the suture loop. This standard method of tying will create strong muscle memory so you can “feel” that your knot is being created correctly. Watch this video to learn more.
