Client Communication: Physical Exam

Think back to the last veterinary appointment you attended, either as a clinic employee or as the client. Recall what type of animal the veterinarian evaluated, and whether or not she completed the physical examination in the same room as the client. Think about what the veterinarian and the client discussed during the examination.

  • Did they discuss the weather? Sports? Recent news?
  • Did the veterinarian demonstrate where tartar can build up and the impact of gingivitis? Did she explain why she was manipulating the patient’s joints, and the importance of assessing for pain?
  • In your opinion, do you feel that the veterinarian successfully communicated the value of the physical examination to the client?

Less than half of pet owners believe that their veterinarian clearly explains when they should bring their pet in to be seen. Furthermore, many pet owners leave appointments without realizing that a physical exam even occurred. However, the majority of pet owners say that they would take their pet to the veterinarian more often if they knew that doing so could prevent future problems and help their pet live longer. Watch the video to learn more about communicating the value of a physical examination.
