Muscle Condition Scoring

Muscle condition score (MCS) is a value ascribed to a patient to evaluate muscle mass. Obtaining a MCS involves the visual and palpation assessment of four key areas:

  1. Temporal bones
  2. Scapulae
  3. Lumbar vertebrae
  4. Pelvic bones

An animal’s physical appearance can be compared against the provided chart to determine its muscle condition score. Click the images to open and download body condition score charts, courtesy of WSAVA and Tufts University.
